About SpendFence

SpendFence is a budgeting app built because traditional budgeting never really worked for my family. Most budgeting tools assume your spending should stay consistent month after month. In reality, life doesn’t work that way. Kids need new clothes, a birthday party comes up, an annual subscription renews, or you decide to take a family trip. Suddenly the budget you carefully planned a few weeks ago no longer reflects reality. Instead of forcing users to constantly rebuild categories and spending limits, SpendFence is designed to adapt. The core concept is called a “Fence.” Fences are spending boundaries that can evolve based on real spending behavior, recurring expenses, and changing financial patterns. The goal isn’t to tell people they failed their budget. The goal is to help them understand what is actually happening with their money and make adjustments before small problems become bigger ones. Key features include: • Bank account syncing for automatic transaction imports • Adaptive budget fences that can evolve with spending habits • Transaction review workflows • Budget cycle awareness (monthly, custom cycles, etc.) • Reporting and spending insights • AI-assisted categorization and recommendations • Historical spending analysis • Premium features focused on deeper financial intelligence One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned while building SpendFence is that budgeting is often more emotional than mathematical. People don’t struggle because they can’t add numbers. They struggle because life changes constantly. I’m a psychiatric nurse by profession and have been building SpendFence as an independent project outside of work. Much of the product direction comes from trying to solve my own family’s budgeting frustrations rather than chasing fintech trends. Current focus areas: * Improving transaction sync reliability * Making budget cycles more intuitive * Refining adaptive fence recommendations * Reducing the amount of manual budget maintenance required I’m looking for feedback on the overall concept, onboarding experience, budget workflows, and whether adaptive budgeting is a problem worth solving compared to more traditional budgeting approaches.
