TicToe.org is a free, browser-based tic tac toe game built for instant play with no friction. Open the site and you're playing within seconds, no account, no download, no email required. The core game offers three ways to play. Challenge an AI on Easy mode, which plays randomly so beginners can win, or Hard mode, which runs a full minimax algorithm and plays a mathematically perfect game. Hard mode cannot be beaten. The best a human can achieve against it is a draw, and only with correct play from the opening move. Local 2-player mode lets two people share one device for pass-and-play matches. Online multiplayer uses WebSockets for real-time play against a friend via a shareable room code, or against a random matched opponent. Beyond the base game, TicToe.org hosts Terni Lapilli, the ancient Roman ancestor of tic tac toe. Archaeologists have found the same 3x3 grid scratched into stone across the Roman Empire, including the steps of the Colosseum, dating to around 100 BC. The Roman version differs from modern tic tac toe in one significant way: each player has only three pieces and slides them between empty squares rather than placing new ones once all six are on the board. This single rule change means the board never fills up, and the strategy shifts entirely from an opening-heavy game to a longer positional one. It's the same grid, played as a genuinely different game. The newest addition is a live tournament mode: the TicToe Championship. It's a 32-player single-elimination bracket where every match is played live with a 30-second move clock per turn. Because tic tac toe is a solved game and perfect play always ends in a draw, matches that draw three times in a row are decided by a coin flip, otherwise the bracket would never resolve. The eventual champion earns a permanent spot on the site's Hall of Fame.
