Make Sharing Expenses Sweet (or sweeter) and stop settling up with an ambigous handshake.
My boyfriend Robert makes three times the amount I do when it comes to income, and he has a lot less bills and much more credit. When we moved this summer, Robert took it like a champ and paid for our new furniture and covered all the moving costs. What was left was a balance that I rightfully owed him and was capable of paying back within a month or two, not right away. We had been using Splitwise to keep track of shared expenses. I even paid for the premium to access unlimited logging and set default custom percentage splits.
But it wasn't the tool that we were looking for. I, ever the tracker who keeps a checkbook to this day, wanted to know what I had paid back and what I still owed for. I hated the "let's call it even" nature of settling up, and I knew that larger expenses would be paid back in chunks. That's when I had the idea to create an app that did just that: create an audit trail for every shared expense, so that those with less liquid cash know where their money is going, and those that are footing the bill can keep track of what's being paid back.
I know this doesn't sound ideal for a lot of people. But for those who value clear accountability, have a hard time talking about money, or just don't want to deal with number talk, we think that this solves that problem. For years, Robert had no idea where his money was going or where it was coming from, even though he made a lot! This app has helped him become more involved in his finances, and really see where equitable sharing starts and ends. It allows me to make sure that the man I love knows what's coming in and what's coming out, and freeing me up from being asked repeated questions on what I still owe for what purchase.
Money talk is hard. That's why we built the app to include gentle conversation starters, and allow first time users to start their journey with Have Another Cherry by taking a financial interaction style assessment. Get a feel for how you view finances and money, how you approach fairness and sharing. Use this knowledge to go into the real conversations you and your partner have about bills and responsibilities.
And of course, have fun. Life is sweet, relationships are sweeter. We all know how quickly money can sour these things.
So go ahead, have another cherry. As many as you like.
