About Kotomora

Kotomora is a free Japanese dictionary built for English-speaking learners who want more than one-line translations. Search using Japanese, English, romaji, kana, kanji, or handwriting. Entries explain how words are actually used, including nuance, register, related words, pitch accent, conjugation, frequency, JLPT level, and example sentences with readings and audio. Kotomora also breaks complete Japanese sentences down word by word, with meanings, readings, grammar notes, and links to every dictionary entry. Translation guides help learners choose between expressions that share the same English meaning but differ by context or tone. Available on the web, iOS, and Android.

The explanations of word usage and context really stand out - makes learning Japanese way more practical than just looking up translations

The context-based learning approach is brilliant - too many language apps just teach vocabulary without explaining when and how to actually use it. Seeing multiple examples and understanding nuances between similar words transforms Japanese

Hi! I built Kotomora because I kept finding translations without enough context to know which Japanese word actually fit. I’d love feedback on the analyzer and related-word comparisons.
