About Overgrid - Drawing Grid

The Grid Method, On Your Phone. Overgrid overlays a precision grid on any reference photo so you can transfer proportions to canvas accurately, the way artists have done for centuries, from Albrecht Dürer to Chuck Close. Draw a grid over the reference, draw a matching grid on your canvas, then copy the image one square at a time. Instead of wrestling with the whole composition at once, you focus on a small, manageable piece, and the proportions take care of themselves. Traditionally this means printing a photo, drawing lines with a ruler, and measuring everything by hand. Overgrid replaces the ruler: import any photo, set your rows and columns, and the grid appears instantly. Crop to your exact canvas proportions first, so nothing is wasted. Adaptive contrast reads the image and picks grid colors that stay visible on any background, dark or light. Add diagonals for composition analysis and numbering to stay oriented on a large canvas. Beyond the grid itself, Overgrid generates value studies (2-8 tonal levels) to see the underlying pattern of light and shadow before committing paint, and temperature overlays to map where warm and cool concentrate across a composition. Canvas size mode lets you set the grid in real centimeters or inches instead of guessing a row/column count, working out the layout from your reference's own proportions. Built for painters transferring a reference to canvas, panel, or paper at any scale; illustrators scaling a rough sketch without distortion; art students practicing the grid method as an observational exercise; and photographers checking composition with rule-of-thirds or custom grids. Everything happens on-device: no account, no cloud upload, no ads. Uninstall the app and everything is gone, because nothing was ever on a server. Runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Android. Free to download: basic grid overlay, preset colors, export up to 1024px, up to 3 projects — a genuinely useful tool, not a crippled demo. A single one-time purchase (no subscription) unlocks unlimited projects, full RGB color picker, adaptive contrast, value and temperature overlays, canvas size mode, presets, and full-resolution export up to 4096px.

Bringing the grid method to a phone is a nice fit: no more drawing lines on printed reference photos. It keeps a technique artists have used for centuries and removes the tedious setup, which helps beginners learning proportions.
